Renewable energy
AECI supplies renewable energy to its member systems
AECI's generating mix includes these renewable energy resources:
- Renewable hydropower from the Southwestern Power Administration has been an
important contributor to AECI's energy mix since its incorporation.
Large-scale hydropower projects use dams to store river water in a reservoir
and are built for the primary purpose of flood control. Because hydropower can
be brought on line quickly, it is a valuable peaking resource. In addition,
hydropower is a low-cost, emissions-free source of electricity that AECI
uses to serve its member systems.
- Green power also is available to all 51 local distribution cooperatives
through AECI's green power purchasing program. The supply for the program
has come from both wind and biomass resources.
- AECI also has signed agreements to purchase all the energy produced from Missouri's first three utility-scale wind farms. These 50- to 57-megawatt facilities are being developed and built in northwest Missouri by Wind Capital Group and John Deere Wind Energy. Each project will consist of 24 to 27 Suzlon S-88, 2.1-MW turbines. Combined, the wind farms can produce 157 megawatts. That's enough power for about 45,000 homes.
AECI has a
process that enables a renewable energy developer to work with the generation
and transmission cooperatives to develop renewable energy projects, allowing
the G&T to support development of renewable energy projects in its service
area.
