At Central Electric Power Cooperative's Chamois Power Plant, staff has successfully experimented with organic fuels such as walnut shells and shelled corn to produce biomass energy for AECI's green power program. The size of the 68-megawatt plant and the setup of its fuel system make it possible to burn different fuels.

Associated Electric Cooperative has offered a green energy program since April 1, 2003, getting an early start on the program
to meet the needs of its Iowa member systems. Iowa law mandated those systems offer an alternate energy
purchase program, effective Jan. 1, 2004. Iowa's law does not apply to Missouri and Oklahoma cooperatives;
however, AECI's board of directors approved offering renewable energy to all member systems.
AECI has offered both wind and biomass energy through its green power program. The biomass
energy was generated at Central Electric Power Cooperative's Chamois Power Plant.
AECI also is purchasing all the wind power from Missouri's first three utility-scale wind farms. AECI's commitment to buy all the power from these farms in northwest Missouri for 20 years and the co-ops’ vast transmission system made the wind farms possible.
