Associated Electric Cooperative Inc. will host a meeting Nov. 29 to address concerns and answer questions regarding water supply issues.

The meeting is open to the public and will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Goppert Community Building, 201 S. Pine St., Norborne, Mo.

AECI is planning to build a 660-megawatt coal-based power plant to meet growing electricity demand among its member-owners: six generation and transmission cooperatives that serve 51 local distribution cooperatives. The proposed plant site is near Norborne, Mo., in Carroll County. The alternate site is near Big Lake, Mo., in Holt County.

Dave Stous, an independent hydrogeologist with expertise in Missouri groundwater issues, will present information on the Missouri River alluvial aquifer, the source of water for AECI’s proposed power plant, and answer questions.

Stous has more than 30 years of experience in groundwater modeling, development and analysis and is an expert on the Missouri River alluvial aquifer. He has worked extensively with several communities and government agencies, including the Kansas City, Mo., Water Services Department; the city of Wichita, Kan.; the city of Olathe, Kan.; the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality; the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.

Also, Jim Vandike, a registered geologist with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources’ Water Resources Group in Rolla, has been invited to participate in the meeting. Vandike is considered an authority on the state’s groundwater issues.

Because existing research indicates sufficient water supply for local use and a power plant, AECI does not anticipate any detrimental impact on local water supply. To determine if sufficient water supply is available, AECI will conduct field studies, including a test well and well monitoring, to determine whether there are any impacts.
