Edna Ellington has dealt with many changes and challenges during her 35-year career at Associated Electric Cooperative’s New Madrid Power Plant. She recently retired as an office associate II in maintenance planning.

Ellington began her career working for the purchasing agent of the contractor building both the plant and neighboring Noranda Aluminum Inc. In 1971 Ellington joined AECI as a secretary and progressed through a series of positions in the warehouse and inventory control. In 1997, she became a senior planning associate in maintenance planning, her position at retirement. She also received AECI’s Excel award for Employee of the Year in a Secretarial or Clerical Field in 1997.

"There’s been a lot to learn from the time I went to work in 1971 to 2006,” Ellington said. “I started off with an electric typewriter, and I can remember when I was learning the computer for the first time.”

Ellington learned to use a lot of new technology during her tenure at Associated, including a program to track the labor and parts of complex outages on the coal units.

"I’m very glad that I had my good job,” Edna said. “I’m very grateful that I could support myself and my children. Although I didn’t have a formal college education, I feel like I got one out there.”

In retirement, Ellington plans to continue gardening, attending events with friends and keeping in touch with former co-workers.

Associated Electric Cooperative Inc. is owned by and provides wholesale power to six regional and 51 local electric cooperative systems in Missouri, southeast Iowa and northeast Oklahoma that serve more than 800,000 customers. AECI’s mission is to provide an economical and reliable power supply and support services to its members with the vision of being the nation’s lowest-cost wholesale power supplier. AECI is a Touchstone Energy Cooperative.
