Extra time to spend with family is retirement’s greatest reward for Vickie Means, who recently retired from Associated Electric Cooperative’s Thomas Hill Energy Center.

Means started at Thomas Hill in August 1981 as an entry-level laborer at the plant. She had just been laid off from a 10-year job and was looking for employment to help provide for her family.

She said a neighbor at the time, who is employed at the plant, convinced her to apply for a job. “I think I ended up in a great place. The benefits, pay and opportunities to advance … There just aren’t many places that offer all that.”

During her 25-year career, Means also worked as a custodian and helped manage the parts inventory in the plant warehouse. She worked at the plant during a period that saw three plant managers, the completion of a third generating unit and the addition of a new warehouse facility.

In addition to spending more time with her family, which includes seven grandchildren, Means plans to stay in touch with her “second family” at the plant. She said she will continue assisting with the plant’s fundraising efforts for the Relay for Life and attending former co-workers’ birthday celebrations.

Associated Electric Cooperative Inc. is owned by and provides wholesale power to six regional and 51 local electric cooperative systems in Missouri, southeast Iowa and northeast Oklahoma that serve more than 800,000 customers. AECI’s mission is to provide an economical and reliable power supply and support services to its members with the vision of being the nation’s lowest-cost wholesale power supplier. AECI is a Touchstone Energy Cooperative.
