Longtime Associated Electric Cooperative employee Cecil Arnett plans to embrace change during retirement, just as he did during his career at Thomas Hill Energy Center.
Arnett retired July 5 as a mechanical maintenance supervisor at the power plant near Moberly. He started at Thomas Hill April 3, 1972, working in the coal yard. He moved to plant operations later that year and moved to the mechanical maintenance department in 1975. He spent the rest of his career in maintenance, becoming a supervisor in 2001.
A lot changed during Arnett’s career, and he said most of the change was for the better. “I guess you could say during my time at the plant we moved into the computer era of power production,” he said. “But I enjoyed those changes. Technology makes more information readily available. Instead of aligning a pump with dial indicators and a lot of trial and error, you do it with a laser alignment. It really took a lot of work out of the job.”
Arnett lives in Excello and said he plans on pursuing a few small business ventures. He has a small farm he’d like to expand and also recently bought the Wooden Nickel, a small tavern in Macon.
