The U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Utilities Service (RUS) is holding public meetings on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for Associated Electric Cooperative’s proposed power plant project near Norborne, Mo.
Meetings will be Feb. 6 at the Knights of Columbus Building, 311 E. Patterson Ave., Salisbury, Mo.; Feb. 7 at the Best Western State Fair Inn, South 65 Highway and 32nd St., Sedalia, Mo.; and Feb. 8 at the Rupe Community Center, 710 Harvest Hills Road, Carrollton, Mo.
Each meeting is from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and will include a presentation summarizing the findings of the Draft Environmental Impact Statement and the opportunity for attendees to make oral and written comments.
AECI, the wholesale power supplier for Missouri’s rural electric cooperatives, has proposed building a 660-megawatt, coal-based power plant to meet growing electricity demand among its member-owners: six generation and transmission cooperatives that serve 51 local distribution cooperatives. The proposed plant site is northwest of Norborne, Mo., in Carroll County. The alternate site is in Holt County near Big Lake, Mo.
The Draft Environmental Impact Statement evaluates the scope, alternatives and additional significant issues related to the power plant project.
The document is available electronically at www.aeci.org in the “Building for Tomorrow – Coal – Public meetings” section and on the RUS Web site, http://www.usda.gov/rus/water/ees/eis.htm. The document also is available at public libraries in the region around the proposed and alternate plant sites (see list below).
