Springfield resident and former rural electric cooperative leader Neil Adams was recognized Feb. 13 at the Missouri Institute of Cooperatives (MIC) Hall of Fame banquet in Lake Ozark, Mo. Neil received the Cooperative Heritage Award that honors individuals who were instrumental in the historical development and success of cooperatives in Missouri.
Adams was Associated Electric Cooperative’s (AECI) first general manager, leading the cooperative through its formative years from 1962 to 1971. AECI, based in Springfield, generates wholesale power supply for six regional generation and transmission cooperatives and 39 local distribution cooperatives in Missouri.
At the time AECI was formed, Missouri’s rural electric cooperatives were trying to maintain adequate power supply. Adams is credited with building AECI from the ground up, managing the relationships and diverse interests of a newly formed board of directors while developing reliable, affordable generating resources for Missouri’s rural electric cooperative systems.
Adams continues to live in Springfield and work as a consultant in the utility industry.
Adam’s recognition was part of MIC’s annual leadership institute and banquet. MIC is a not-for-profit membership organization dedicated to the development of educational programs that provide better understanding of the cooperative business model. MIC’s membership is comprised of farm supply, marketing, farm credit, new generation and rural electric cooperatives.
Associated Electric Cooperative Inc. is owned by and provides wholesale power to six regional and 51 local electric cooperative systems in Missouri, southeast Iowa and northeast Oklahoma that serve more than 850,000 customers. AECI’s mission is to provide an economical and reliable power supply and support services to its members. AECI is a Touchstone Energy Cooperative.
