Walter Flickinger, former journeyman electrician/HVAC at Thomas Hill Energy Center, has retired after 27 years with Associated Electric Cooperative Inc. (AECI), which owns the power plant.
Flickinger joined AECI in 1981 as a journeyman electrician at the plant, later progressing to journeyman electrician specialist. For his last 12 years at the plant, Flickinger helped maintain the plant’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. He was responsible for everything from 180-ton chillers to window air conditioners.
"Associated has been a good learning experience,” Flickinger said. “I tell you what, the people I worked with are … the most talented group. I’ve never seen so much talent in one place in my life,” he said.
Before joining the plant, Flickinger worked 15 years at Missouri Power and Light Co. as a substation foreman. The switch to Thomas Hill was relatively easy – “kind of like changing shoes, just more of it,” he said.
Flickinger also started his own HVAC company, Control Aire, in Moberly in 1995. Though his son now manages the business, Flickinger said he looks forward in his retirement to helping local businesses with their air conditioning needs.
He and his wife, Margaret, have trips planned to Pella, Iowa; Branson and St. Louis; Las Vegas; and Cancun. A collector of Egyptian, Mayan and Incan antiquities, Flickinger hopes to visit Egypt and Peru as well.
Associated Electric Cooperative Inc. is owned by and provides wholesale power to six regional and 51 local electric cooperative systems in Missouri, southeast Iowa and northeast Oklahoma that serve more than 850,000 customers. AECI’s mission is to provide an economical and reliable power supply and support services to its members, including the new “Take Control & Save” energy efficiency program, www.TakeControlAndSave.coop. AECI is a Touchstone Energy Cooperative.
