Bill Machetta, former equipment operator at Thomas Hill Energy Center, has retired after 24 years with Associated Electric Cooperative Inc. (AECI), which owns the plant.

Machetta spent 13 years as a utility operator in the coal yard and then progressed to yard equipment operator, running bulldozers and loaders.

"You know, there wasn’t anything about the job I didn’t like,” he said. “It was different every day, and there was a lot to learn. I thought I knew it all, but every day I’d learn something new.”

On a typical day, Machetta would help unload 140-car coal trains and move the coal to two coal yards and a storage area. As many as seven coal trains a week arrived at the plant.

Before joining Associated, he worked 21 years as a truck driver for Orscheln Brothers Truck Line in Moberly. Now, Machetta is enjoying his six grandchildren, ages 26 to 5, and doing some woodworking. He and his wife, Ruth, enjoy long-distance travel, having been to Switzerland, Germany and Alaska. They have their sights set on Australia next.

Associated Electric Cooperative Inc. is owned by and provides wholesale power to six regional and 51 local electric cooperative systems in Missouri, southeast Iowa and northeast Oklahoma that serve more than 850,000 customers. AECI’s mission is to provide an economical and reliable power supply and support services to its members, including the new “Take Control & Save” energy efficiency program, www.TakeControlAndSave.coop. AECI is a Touchstone Energy Cooperative.
