FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Lynn Atchley of Benton has retired after 36 years at the New Madrid Power Plant, which is owned and operated by Associated Electric Cooperative.

A shift supervisor when he retired, Atchley got his first look at New Madrid Power Plant in 1973 as a construction worker driving foundation pilings for the plant’s second generating unit. A few months later, he joined the plant as a temporary laborer, advancing through operations to control room operator.

In 1981, Atchley became assistant shift supervisor, which involved locking down equipment and systems so they could be safely worked on. In 1996, he became shift supervisor.

Among the “big events” of Atchley’s career was the plant’s conversion to low-sulfur coal in the 1990s to improve air quality and later the addition of environmental controls to reduce nitrogen oxides from emissions. “These were major jobs, and it took several years with everybody contributing to do it,” he said.

“I leave with a sense of appreciation for Associated allowing me to improve my skills and have the opportunities to move on up. I enjoyed seeing things accomplished, to seeing a job through,” he said.

Atchley and his wife plan to spend more time with their family. Retirement also will mean more time for hunting, fishing for crappie and catfish, gardening, going to auctions, getting active in a church and doing small engine repairs in Atchley’s shop.

Associated Electric Cooperative Inc. is owned by and provides wholesale power to six regional and 51 local electric cooperative systems in Missouri, southeast Iowa and northeast Oklahoma that serve more than 875,000 customers. AECI’s mission is to provide an economical and reliable power supply and support services to its members, including its “Take Control & Save“ energy efficiency program, www.TakeControlAndSave.coop. AECI is a Touchstone Energy Cooperative.
