Generation fleet and resource mix

Associated Electric Cooperative manages a diverse generation fleet of coal, natural gas, liquid fuel, wind and hydropower resources. This balanced generation mix allows for optionality that enables Associated to take advantage of weather and market conditions to benefit members. As the market shifts, Associated can select the lowest-cost generation to serve native member load, finding the optimum position to reliably meet member energy needs, no matter the season.

As Associated maintains vigilance to ensure the reliability of its power supply, external forces are busy at work attempting to quickly transition power generation in America from reliable, dispatchable resources to intermittent, non-dispatchable sources. This goal of a fast transition to a new energy paradigm threatens reliability and affordability for consumers of electricity. Three key obstacles must be considered to ensure a reliable power supply: technology, transmission and time.

Community

At Associated Electric Cooperative, we take seriously our obligation to improve and care for the communities we serve. Cooperatives operate by seven core principles, and concern for community is one of those. Associated's support of our home communities, both financially and with volunteer time, is core to our identity and will remain among our most important investments.

ELG Compliance

As a member-owned cooperative, Associated Electric Cooperative focuses on serving its members with responsible, affordable, reliable electricity that is balanced with environmental stewardship of our natural resources.

Environmental Stewardship

Balancing energy reliability and affordability with clean air, land and water resources is important to Associated Electric Cooperative’s members and continues to be our focus. Since 2015, Associated and its members have invested more than $115 million to meet Coal Combustion Residuals and Effluent Limitation Guidelines issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, funding coal ash and water quality projects, including pond closures, water systems and groundwater quality monitoring.

Investing in and giving back to our community

Member Governance

Twelve elected members sit on Associated Electric Cooperative’s board of directors and are informed and involved in setting the strategic direction of the co-op. These board members are comprised of leaders from Associated’s six transmission cooperative member-owners and their distribution cooperatives.

Associated's grassroots, bottom-up governance ensures member-consumers are represented in all decisions, one of the many benefits of being an electric cooperative member.
